Boundaries and interactions

In this video Diana Larsen and Neal Taylor discuss the team’s boundaries and interactions, how to facilitate this during a Liftoff, and which activities could follow on if needed.

What are the boundaries and interactions?

No team is an island and inevitably it will interact with other teams or other people in the pursuits of its aims. This activity is an attempt to define the container of the team (what’s in the team, and what’s out) and what’s the larger container in which the team resides. After it’s important to visualise all the different interactions with other teams and how they affect the team (essentially: what do they need from us, what do we need from them).

How to facilitate during a Liftoff?

Starting with the team in the centre on a post-it, map out all the different stakeholders and teams, each with it’s own post-it. Start the conversation to visualise what the interactions are and make a note of:

  • what they need from us (arrow from team to stakeholder with description)
  • what we need from them (arrow from stakeholder to team with description)

These exchanges could be reports, deliverables, information, data.

By the end of this the team knows where we fit in the context of this organisation or eco-system.

Potential follow on activities

Following on, facilitators can potentially integrate the following activities depending on team needs and time:

  • Wardley mapping
  • Interaction mapping
  • Stakeholder Influence v Interest Matrix
