Product Vision & Team Mission with Teams

Get your team aligned around a shared direction

When people describe the same product, team or priority in different ways, delivery slows down.
Decisions are revisited, priorities compete and people work hard without always moving in the same direction.

Product Vision & Team Missions is a focused, facilitated session that helps your team agree what you are building, why it matters and what the team is responsible for achieving.

In one 60–70 minute session, we turn different perspectives into a clear product vision, a practical team mission and a starter decision log your team can use immediately.

What problem does this solve?

Most teams do not lack ideas, expertise or effort. They lack a shared definition of success.

One person may believe the priority is customer growth. Another may be focused on technical resilience. A third may be working towards a deadline that has never been clearly agreed.

Without a shared vision and mission, teams often experience:

  • Competing priorities
  • Repeated alignment meetings
  • Decisions being reopened
  • Unclear ownership
  • Work that does not connect clearly to an outcome
  • Different explanations of what the team is trying to achieve

This session creates a common reference point for future decisions.

What you will leave with

A clear product vision

A concise description of the future you are trying to create, the people it matters to and the change your product should make.

A practical team mission

A clear statement of what the team is responsible for achieving now, rather than a broad aspiration that could apply to any team.

Shared success criteria

A small number of indicators that help the team recognise whether it is moving in the right direction.

A starter decision log

A simple record of the most important decisions made during the session, including the reasoning behind them, so the team does not have to revisit the same questions repeatedly.

A two-person alignment test

Before the session ends, two members of the team explain the vision and mission back in their own words. If they cannot describe the same direction, the work is not finished.

How the session works

The session is facilitated online and normally takes between 60 and 70 minutes.

1. Current state

We establish what the team is working on, what has changed and where there is currently confusion or disagreement.

2. Customers and stakeholders

We identify who the work is intended to help and what meaningful change the product or service should create for them.

3. Product vision

We turn the longer-term ambition into a clear statement the team can understand, remember and use.

4. Team mission

We define the contribution this specific team is responsible for making towards that vision.

5. Success and decisions

We agree how progress will be recognised and capture the important decisions made during the conversation.

6. Sign-off

Two members of the team explain the vision and mission back independently. This provides a simple test of whether genuine alignment has been achieved.

Who should attend?

The session works best with the people who shape the direction and the people responsible for delivering it.

  • Founders and co-founders
  • Product leaders
  • Engineering leaders
  • Delivery leaders
  • Team leads
  • Key members of a newly formed or changing team

A typical session includes between two and eight participants.

When is this useful?

  • When starting a new team
  • When launching a new product or service
  • When priorities have changed
  • When a team is working hard but lacks a common direction
  • When leaders explain the same strategy differently
  • Before hiring or onboarding new team members
  • Before a period of growth, investment or organisational change

Why Team Liftoffs?

Team Liftoffs is built around a simple idea: the way a team starts, restarts or changes direction shapes everything that follows.

The session draws on more than 15 years of experience launching, aligning and improving technology and product teams in complex organisations.

Our experience includes work with organisations such as Volkswagen Group, Sky, Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Vhi Healthcare, as well as startups, founders and distributed teams.

This work has included:

  • Launching and restarting multidisciplinary teams
  • Aligning leaders around shared outcomes
  • Facilitating planning and decision-making across large programmes
  • Improving delivery across teams operating in different countries
  • Helping product, engineering and business leaders turn strategy into practical team direction

What this session is not

This is not a long strategy engagement, a generic team-building exercise or a workshop that ends with a collection of digital sticky notes.

The purpose is to produce a small number of useful outputs that the team can refer to immediately:

  • A product vision
  • A team mission
  • Shared success criteria
  • A starter decision log

Price

£200 for one facilitated 60–70 minute online session.

The price includes preparation, facilitation and a concise written summary of the agreed outputs.

Build the foundation before you scale

A team cannot make consistently good decisions if its members are working towards different versions of the future.

This session gives your team a shared direction it can explain, use and build upon.
