Facilitating the Vision in a Liftoff

In this video Diana Larsen and Neal Taylor discuss the vision, how to facilitate it during a Liftoff, and which activities could follow on if needed.

What is a vision?

A statement! What does this future world look like for the customer? The vision needs to be aspiring and meaningful. It also needs to be a statement of ‘this will be done’. It needs to be memorable (at the forefront of our minds) so it’s also succinct.

Preparation

The draft vision statement is usually prepared before a Liftoff. This is usually done with those owning the product and vision.

How to facilitate during a Liftoff?

During the Liftoff, facilitate a conversation with members about what is inspiring and what is not. What is understood? What still needs to be clarified?

Use affinity sorting on post-its to help gather the thoughts and group them into themes. After gathering insights aim to clarify the vision so that there is an agreement and a commitment. We want to reach a stage whereby everyone on the team can say: ‘yes that’s our vision’.

Potential follow on activities

Following on, facilitators can potentially integrate the following activities depending on team needs and time:

  • Lean business canvas
  • Do a drawing of this future state
  • Create the front cover of a children’s book of this future state
  • Create a collage of inspiring images
  • Lego building
