In this video Diana Larsen and Neal Taylor discuss the mission, how to facilitate it during a Liftoff, and which activities could follow on if needed.
What is it?
A description of what the team is going to do to accomplish the vision. It will probably. If the vision is the ‘why’, the mission is the ‘what’.
Preparation
Draft a preliminary mission statement together with a product owner or team lead so that we don’t start with a blank page.
How to facilitate during a Liftoff?
Refer to the draft mission statement. Then, using post-its facilitate a discussion for each of these key questions such as:
- Who are our customers?
- What are our outcomes?
- What are we actually delivering?
- What is the value to the customer?
- What questions do we need to answer?
This can be done in small teams to identify what else is missing from the draft statement.
Then begin to clarify the mission statement that includes the input from the team and the discussion outcomes.
Ask participants if this is the work that will keep them excited until the vision has been achieved?
Potential follow on activities
Following on, facilitators can potentially integrate the following depending on team needs and time:
- A schedule to review the team mission
